I was part of an eBay Roundtable discussion recently with six
other experts and we all agreed that the number one question most
new (and even old) eBay sellers ask is:
"Where do I find things to sell on eBay??"
To help answer that question I have compiled 10 ways that anyone
can use to find products to sell on eBay. This is by no means a definitive list and depending on your
situation, some of the ways may not apply to you. However, if you’re a beginner and don’t know where to start, this
list should help you get on track.
1. Look Around The House:
We all have items lying around the house that we no longer use or
need. Have you grown or shrunk in size? If so, you have clothes
you can no longer wear and can sell. Did you get a gift for
Christmas or your birthday that you will never use? If so, slap
it on eBay (just don’t let the person who gave you the gift find
out). Do your kids have toys they no longer play with? Just
looking around your house and garage should give you plenty of
things to get your eBay ball rolling.
2. Garage Sales and Flea Markets:
When it comes to eBay, remember this old adage: One man’s junk is
another man’s treasure. Now this is not to say that you should
sell junk on eBay. You should only sell products in good
condition. The point is you can find items in good condition at
garage sales and flea markets that you can pick up cheap and
resell for a profit. Remember, nobody wants to buy your old
Beanie Babies that no longer have eyes and noses, but they may
buy "gently used" items if they’re in good shape and offered at a
good price.
3. Talk To Your Friends and Relatives:
After you’ve gone through your own in-house inventory, contact
your friends and relatives and tell them you have started an eBay
business and will sell their items for a piece of the sales
price. Chances are they have as much excess stuff lying around
their house as you did. Offer to list the items for them and if
they sell, take half the profits. You will probably have to pay
the eBay fees out of your pocket up front, but you can then
deduct the eBay fees from the sales price before slicing up the
pie.
4. Consignment Sales:
Consignment sales are a great way to find a wide range of
products to sell on eBay. Consignment selling means that you
offer to sell an item that belongs to a company. In exchange for
your trouble you get a percentage of the sales price. You can
charge up to 50% plus fees for smaller items like clothing,
lamps, jewelry, etc. and around 15% for larger items like cars,
boats, and bulldozers (yes, I said bulldozers).
Contact every business in town and offer to list their excess
goods on eBay for a piece of the action. Most businesses have
returned items, liquidated products, used equipment, etc. that
they would love to get rid of, but don’t have the time to do so.
Many will see you as their hero if you can help them get rid of
this merchandise and you’ll make a pretty profit for your
efforts. For business customers you should have them pay the eBay
fees on the front end, not you.
5. Thrift Stores:
Thrift stores are an excellent place to look for things to sell
online. Stores maintained by the Salvation Army and non-profit%

Do you know how many people in US are earning their livelihood
with the help of eBay? According to a new survey conducted on
July 2005 by ACNielsen, a leading research firm, an astounding
724 thousand Americans respond that they rely on eBay for their
main or supplemental income. Apart from these professional
sellers, another 1.5 million people confirmed that they generate
additional income by selling goods on eBay. Last year alone,
around 150 million registered users have sold over US$ 34 billion
worth of goods on eBay. Isn’t it amazing?
Why entrepreneurs are flocking into eBay? Some of the reasons are
quite apparent.
• Starting a business on eBay is easy and quick
• You don’t require large investment
• Anybody can start an eBay business, no special skill is required
• You can sell virtually anything on eBay
• With your eBay business you can have flexible work time
• You have a ready-made market of over 150 million people and
counting
• eBay get 1.5 billion page views each month. You get access to
this massive traffic almost paying nothing.
So, there is no wonder that anybody with slightest penchant to
have their own business will jump into this great opportunity.
But, there are two major problems that many of the would-be eBay
sellers encounter. The first is what to sell and the next is
where to find it.
What to sell?
According to Forrester Research, a major research company, this
year, categories with products purchased by women will have the
most growth in online retailing. Some categories are already
getting more than ten percent of their overall sales through the
Internet, which include: computer hardware and software, tickets,
travel, books, consumer electronics, cosmetics and fragrances,
toys and video games, and flowers, cards and gifts. While
choosing items to sell on eBay, you should also explore the
features available on eBay and other places on the Internet that
show items people search and items people actually buy.
eBay has a complete section called “Seller Central” dedicated to
delivering utmost information to help you succeed in selling
products through eBay. Two links from this section should
interest you. One is What’s Hot
(http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html) and the other
one is Category Tips
(http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html).
When you go to the subsection ‘What’s Hot’, check out the
following three areas:
Hot Items by Category
This is a comprehensive report of categories, and products within
a category by the ratio of bid to listings growth rate in PDF
format. The report gets updated monthly and shows which products
have increased demand in comparison to last month. Super hot
products, for example, have over 35 percentage point difference
between bid growth rate and listing growth rate. According to the
latest report, by the way, Sunglasses for men, in particular
Prada sunglasses are super hot.
eBay Pulse
This is another area where you can see the top ten searched
categories, ten most widely watched auctions, list of stores with
most active listings, and other cool stuffs on daily basis.

This article covers some ideas on efficiently (commercially) finding things to sell on ebay. One of the most difficult tasks facing any budding entrepreneur is what to sell and what profit can be made for selling that product(s). It sounds easy but it isn’t because if it was then it would just be a case of selling anything and a profit would be made and everyone would be doing it.
I think it would be fair to say that many eBay entrepreneurs start with ‘big ideas’ about how much they are going to sell and how soon they will be able to quit their day job. Some do, but the vast majority can’t. It’s not because the people that can’t are less intelligent or less able to do business – it’s just that they often don’t know ‘which’ products to sell on eBay and how to market them properly.
You have now heard me talk about two things, ‘which products’ and ‘marketing’. The crucial point to consider here is that you must always consider ‘Markets’ first. The big mistake most people make both online and offline is that they look at, or have a product that they have fallen in love with but nobody wants. How often have you heard the saying that ’success has many fathers but failure is an orphan’ well this translates in commercial terms as ’sales success = money to spend and sales failure = broke’. No one likes to fail but if you don’t do the proper home work you will fail ‘Every time’ – it’s that simple!
Looking at the ‘Market’ first. One of the most important tasks is to look at the Hot items report that eBay produces for the past month. If you haven’t heard of this then head off to pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/hotitems.pdf. This report will give you the best selling categories and in some cases the best selling items on eBay in the last month(s). If you haven’t heard of this then go there after you read this article and download it. Best of all it’s ‘free’.
OK so you know about the report or you will be downloading it – how can I use it? Well let me suggest one way. Look at reviewing and collecting several reports, especially in areas that you may be interested in. Look for two ‘Massively’ important things ‘Trend consistency’ within that item i.e. is that category or item consistently selling and secondly Niches within that category for item(s) which may be exploitable.
If you have done this then you will have proven that there is a market before you even attempt to find a product for that market. The odds are now more stacked in your favour than they were before!
The next step is to then find a product to sell to that market. This where your skill and judgement must come into play. You must research, research and do more research. The most profitable products tend to service a niche. I have found quite a few. Niches are filled with ‘targeted buyers’ and if you ignore these buyers you may make some money but you will not be able to make a business out of buying and selling on eBay – that is a plain fact.
It’s also a fact that many ’savvy’ individuals now make a good living on eBay and doing it ‘quietly’ – they don’t want to publicise their niches because if they did then it would no longer be profitable for them. I’m sure you see the logic in this.
The last point in this article is to highlight the incredible importance of ‘Traffic’. You may have the best shop on eBay but no buyers. If you have things to sell on ebay and you have done market research and have a good niche but no sales then you need to look at traffic first!
Without Traffic you’re dead in the water, especially if you have done the market research. The experienced eBayers are traffic masters and they are the ones that make the money and have been able to quit their day jobs!

Who would refuse to earn money at the comforts of their home? With a functional computer, an Internet connection, a little capital, and basic marketing know-how, you can immediately start out doubling your money and transact business to any parts of the world. This is an advantage of living in the information age. Information and Communication Technologies opens a new venue for aspiring entrepreneurs - the online marketplace. One of the most established sites in this industry is eBay.
EBay offers a convenient place for buying and selling goods, and you don’t even have to be a professional marketer to be a successful seller. With eBay, you can stay away from annoying employer who keeps bossing you a lot, and the best thing is, it’s available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, so buyers can come along at any time of the day. What else would you look for?
A typical eBay starter would initially sell things they can find around the house. Understandably, since most of them do not have sufficient capital just yet. However, as your business starts to grow, it is not sensible to settle in merely selling your own items, because at the end of it all, you might just find yourself living in an empty house. Hence, upon earning a little, you may want to consider buying wholesale items and sell it on eBay. This way, you can be profitable, but before you do, you have to bear in mind a lot of things. eBay selling, like any other business, is not rather that easy as you may imagine.
Whatever business you want to engage in, you have to devote your time and effort to learn the nature of the industry. If you think you’d make a lot of money in putting tons of products available in your account, or by merely selling what you just enjoy - think again. Maybe eBay business is not for you. The secret is actually very simple - find products to sell on ebay the SMART way!
You have to remember that you will only survive in this business only if you make money. And you will only make money only if you can sell your products. And you will be able to sell your products only if you have buyers interested in what you are selling. Consumers, indeed, are your life. No interested buyers means no profit at all. Waste of money. Waste of time.
Therefore, the first thing you have to do is to do some researches. First off is market analysis. You have to find the hottest items that have actually high consumer value. eBay has this "advance search" feature, wherein you can key in the item you want to analyze, then select the "completed listings" only. Through that feature, you’ll have an idea on what products are usually sold on eBay. What you have to study are the items that have already been sold. Look for how many items are sold, how many people bid for the item, and how much did buyers bid.
There are other research tools you can use that are available at the eBay seller’s section. You must remember to always do up to date researches prior to buying wholesale items because what sells last month may not be saleable this month.
Earning money is not really as easy as it may seem. But being at the right place, at the right time, armed with the right products, you’ll surely find loads of money coming in your way.

It’s not uncommon to hear about people who are trying to start an eBay business, spending a lot of time (and sometimes money) on trying to figure out which items sell the best on eBay. Indeed, you may well have heard about elaborate systems for determining this information, and even expensive courses which focus on how to find this information. Amazingly, systems and courses for this purpose are usually unnecessary - eBay wants sellers to know what sells best on eBay (because it’s in their interest to make their site as busy as possible), and so puts this information right in front of you - on the eBay web site!
If you take a look at any category, you will see the word "hot" next to some items. Of course, there’s a reason why eBay marked this particular items as "hot": simply because they attracted a lot of bids (over 30 at the time of writing). So, all you have to do is study what kind of items eBay marks as "hot", and you’ll have a very good idea as to what is attracting the most interest from buyers.
While this a good start, most power sellers will agree that there is a little more to figuring out which items sell best than this. In fact, some claim that it is a science. One of the best ways to figure out items that will result in a successful auction in the future is to do research on the auctions that were successful in the past.
eBay also offers some tools which can be used to to determine what items sell best. One of these is is " eBay Marketplace Research", which allows you to view important statistical information on the buying trends at eBay . This product contains all of the data one could possibly ever need to determine how well - or how poorly - an item will do in an eBay auction, however, you should be aware that there is a fee associated with using the eBay Marketplace Research tools.
Another tool that you will find useful in your quest for finding hot selling items for your eBay auctions, is a listing of popular eBay search terms. Such a list can be found at http://popular.ebay.com/
When you do the research, you might be surprised at which items tend to sell well at eBay , and which don’t. eBay is an usual market, and most power sellers will tell you that they have sometimes seen the strangest things sell for very high prices, while items that would sell quickly in any other environment are sometimes left just sitting there. In other words, doing a bit of research can pay massive dividends - and it’s certainly much better than simply guessing as to what will sell.

Everyone has talked about how to sell things on eBay and even the possibilities of becoming rich from the sales generated. Many are skeptical of becoming successful through eBay, but since more and more claims are popping up of success stories, you finally want a piece of the pie. Yet, you know absolutely nothing about how the site actually functions. Many people can not even imagine selling something on the Internet and having someone you never met pay you for it. How does it all work?
When first learning how to sell things on eBay, you need to register. Once you purchase or sell something, you become "verified" and can receive feedback from other sellers and buyers regarding their satisfaction with your transaction. Another reason this is great, is because you can read through any member’s feedback or even view their percentage of satisfied customers before you engage in doing business with them.
What happens is basically eBay allows people who are wanting to sell their items around their home, or when they are learning how to sell things on eBay, such as affiliate programs or any other merchandise, to be able to reach more people by offering the entire nation the opportunity to bid on their item; this is just like a physical auction. At the same time, buyers can review an item and decide themselves how much they are willing to pay to purchase the item. It is really simple, a buyer will set their own price, which must at least meet the minimum request set by the seller, and the highest bidder wins the item.
When learning how to sell things on eBay you will find that there are several payment options available for you. Money orders are accepted by most eBay sellers, and some will accept personal and cashier’s checks. But the one thing you will find out is that the preferred method of payment by most people, including myself, is PayPal.
PayPal allows the pros and the individuals just learning how to sell things on eBay, the opportunity to pay with a credit or debit card, or even by an electronic check. The money is deposited right into the seller’s account immediately.
Learning how to sell things on eBay is a great place to reach more people who may be in need of what you are selling. The only down side to selling on eBay is people have to wait for their product to be shipped, rather than just picking it up after the auction is over. But you will find that there will be many great discounts when you learn how to sell things on eBay, as well as many antiques, collectibles, and other hard to find items.
Buy learning how to sell things on eBay it can become a great source of extra income or even become a career itself. EBay is easy to use and with a little practice and guidance, you will become an expert as well.
